Beat Of The Week 17 // Odonis Odonis

This weeks Beat Of The Week is brought to you by James Vella of FatCat Records.

Track – Odonis Odonis ‘Busted Lip’

Astonishingly prolific, Toronto resident Dean Tzenos has apparently written almost 100 Odonis Odonis songs, including the brilliant, newly-arrived ‘Busted Lip / Handle Bars’ 7”, released on his local We Are Busy Bodies label. A scuzzy, cracked take on lo-fi pop, Dean’s music recalls My Bloody Valentine, The Velvet Underground, Suicide, The Jesus and Mary Chain in its slightly cold-hearted, but inventive infiltrations of noise into what might otherwise be considerably prettier pop tracks.

Also reminiscent of Deerhunter – in their snappy, driving rhythms and floating vocals – and of The Horrors’ swirling, electronically-coloured soundworlds, a sense of intrigue and space-filling depth surrounds Odonis Odonis, a project that, incredibly, started life as a concept album based on a mixtape made by Dean’s sisters for their brother. Now cast into a fully-fledged musical output for Dean, his subject matter is appropriately halfway between shadowy and expressionistic: “relationships, temptation, cheating, broken hearts. Broken friendships, environment, economy, religion, day to day encounters. Anything that comes up the day I’m writing.”

As an exciting footnote, Dean’s live band also features members of METZ, another great Toronto-based band also on FatCat’s radar.
